You completely mutilated this song, but I absolutely love it. I guess I should listen to the original to see what you've brought to this. It sounds to me like the feeling that one might have standing infront of one's house, completely despondant, watching while the firemen finally extinguish the last flickers of fire from your home after it has been consumed by fire. I can picture the ashes floating through the air as I listen to this, and small children holding on to their teddy bears.
Excellent vision, man!!!!

Wow, the way you sing this makes me believe it. I really dig the guitar, just a slow moving train inching it's way straight at you. The song makes me feel like I'm holding the gas can, slightly spilling out in one hand, a lit match in the other, the fire estinguisher on the ground, with me trying to decide what to drop to pick it up.

Ah this a very beautiful rendition of this song. Love the way you sing this. So sincere and haunting. There's such a sense of desperation in your voice. So moving. Just a nice, nice cover! Clapping

I'll be honest - first time I listened to this, it didn't sit well - my loyalty to the original was getting in the way of my hearing this - but second time round I'll admit it grew on me and your unique arrangement and vocal style have done justice to your appreciation of the song :)) (Very Happy)
I always say there is no point doing a cover to just copy the original, and you have certainly added your own touch to this one. Nice job Steve! Clapping

I really admire you for the approach you taken with this Steve. The original is such a delicate ballad, so to stick a big fuzzy electric guitar in it - and make it work - is a testament to both your talents and the durability of the song.

I really like the barely audible vocal harmonies, I always have a thing for someone taking the effort to do something cool in a song and then almost completely bury it in the mix - it's like finding hidden treasure or discovering a special secret. I love the piano, each notes shines through like a little ray of hope against the pain expressed by the lyrics. It also should be said that this version made me listen to the lyrics in a different light than the original. Phrases jumped out of me that I maybe overlooked a little on Fiona's version.
Another very emotionally heartfelt vocal from you too, mate. Top stuff :) (Smile)

This is badass. The lyrics are so emotional yet the music is so bright its a huge contrast, my emotions feel like there in conflict...i wanna cry but cant understand why?

This definetly invokes some vivid imagery.I could see this going along with quite a few movies and fitting quite well.I was envisioning this being played during a scene in "eternal sunshine of the spotless mind" and it worked perfectly.Atleast in this fucked up mind i have lol.I think this would fit nicely in a war movie too...so many possibilities, my mind is in bliss as i listen heh.

This song has a life of its own, excellent cover.

Well Steven. First of all I want to know exactly what settings you’ve used on the distortion on the guitar because I’ve been looking for that setting for fecking months (it sounds so like one of my favourite songs by Jeff Klein – California and I’ve always wanted to write a song with that kind of distorted guitar behind it). Fuck me but when you get to the //I’m so confused/all I can do is lose// my heart cried a little. Shouldn’t do that I guess, maybe a little narcissistic; but its not the lyrics but the way you sing these lines throughout the song, there’s a real wistfulness when you get to the /marking time/ line. I love all the detail that you’ve put into this song Steven, the keys, the oh-so-subtle backing vocals, the vocal effects, so much hidden away there. This song has always meant more to me than any other I’ve ever written, it means more to me than I could even begin to explain and I was a little nervous of hearing it covered, but more than anything else you’ve captured the emotion behind the song in your voice; which I knew you would as there’s always a huge amount of passion and belief in your vocal delivery in your own songs, and that’s carried through into this one, and that’s what counts for me over and above anything else. But, seriously, I want those distortion settings or I’ll have to kill you. Laughing My Arse Off Thank you Steven, both for the comments you made in the description to this song, and also for liking it enough to want to cover it and making it into your own whilst staying true to the emotion/feel of the song; you seem to have brought more life to the lyrics for me; now I know why people cry when I play this live Laughing My Arse Off Hug

There's a sadness and a desperation in your voice in this song that really stands out...and the piano, so simple, and so plaintive, accentuates that feeling. I haven't heard the original yet, but you've done a wonderful job on this version. Nodding Cry Bouncy

i haven't heard the origianl, oh bad Sham, i guess ur gonna tell me to go listen to it Rolls Eyes
Well, this is actually better than i imagined for some reason, actually its really good. The effects on the vocals seem to work really well, and you seem to have done a good job of singing the song. As for the keys, well they are very forcefull and weak at the same time, im not sure if you did that on purpose or not, but it flows along the emotion in the song pretty pretty well.

I like how clean your vocals are. It really stands out against the distoted guitar. This song sounds like something I would have made in a drunken depression, just thinking up words as I went along. Sometimes that is when the best truth comes out, and you captured that emotion well.

I agree with Fra, remembering the original made it a bit difficult, at first, to let this version enter on its own merits. But I also agree that after a while those things start getting through clearer: I really did like the way Fiona wrote this and you manage to, completely in your own way capture all those feelings.
The fuzz guitar is one of those things that it took a while to get used to but I really like that idea and how it contrasts the vocals.
I can see why the little piano would accentuate the feelings in the song, but I think it doesn't sit all that well musically, with the voices and the guitar, in my opinion. For me, even though it may well underline what is conveyed through the words, I feel it kind of detracts and tears the song up a bit where it needs to be tighter. The stark contrast between the mono guitar and those voices is IMHO jarring enough to grab my full attention, and in a good way!
I remember being critical against the way Fiona sang this originally, when she would put so much lament in her, I felt it got to the point where it got "oversad" almost. What I mean by that is that I felt it lacked "dynamics" to make it more musical: the sadness would for me be everywhere and feeling slightly overstated in the vocals, as if it was approaching the point where the voice as a musical instrument loses its musical quality, and presence (where dynamics, I think, is important) and becomes more something to just state "this is sadness".
I could say that about these vocals as well, they get through very well for a while but when there's no dynamic in the way pain and sadness is conveyed I feel it loses some of its "musical" quality and that makes it harder, once again as "I" see it, to experience the fullness of the expression in this song. But aside from that the mix makes this a journey and I do like the way that it is so uncompromised too.
Unique approach and something I will remember Thumbs Up

I think this is probably the one song of hers I haven't heard which is good (no preconceived ideas). Not a whole lot I can say without reiterating ^ that stuff, but I do like the piano melody, that's cool. An all-around moving song, you chose a good one to do and did it well. Sun

Oh amazing Wow! a Girlb cover, how wild!!! I'm absorbing the bleakness of your musical portrayal of another's words and music, and knowing this song already I can only say that it's an off kilter cover, your emotional tie to this track is tangible and you've taken it away and bruised it gently without losing the curve of the unique bodywork which made it a classic, love this Steve and you've really taken it to heart I can hear that, keep up the great and unusual work NoddingClappingPaint Palette

your singing is a little halaka-ey at times, though, you've affected your voice in a way that masks the definitive qualities in your voice, which I being a choir geek, have trouble not reprimanding, I really would've loved to hear more of the pure voice tone in this, but what you've done here accentuates an angstful corner.
that is a really nice guitar fuzz, it keeps the note really well, while keeping a nice sustained fuzz, has a cool contrast against the piano melody.
